Maharashtra MLC Polls: Mahayuti Suffers Major Setback as MVA Wins Three Seats
Maharashtra MLC election results deal a major blow to Mahayuti as the MVA wins three graduates' seats, triggering a BJP-Shinde Sena face-off. Bihar also witnesses a surprise BJP defeat in Darbhanga.
Of the five seats, Mahayuti candidates managed to win only two. The alliance secured victories in the Amravati Teachers' Constituency and Pune Teachers' Constituency. However, its candidates suffered defeats in all three graduates' constituencies: Pune, Marathwada and Nagpur. The results have raised questions within the Mahayuti alliance, with disagreements emerging between the BJP and the Shiv Sena's Shinde faction.
The BJP has reportedly blamed the Shinde-led Shiv Sena for the alliance's poor performance in the graduates' constituencies. In Pune, Ravindra Dhangekar had openly taken a position against the Mahayuti candidate. A similar situation emerged in the Marathwada Graduates' Constituency, where Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Abdul Sattar openly extended his support to the Maha Vikas Aghadi candidate.
These developments have prompted the BJP to hold the Shinde faction responsible for the alliance's electoral setback. The issue has brought the BJP and the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde face to face, with tensions escalating over the reasons behind the defeat.
Meanwhile, the BJP has suffered another setback in Bihar, where the Legislative Council election results have also produced an unexpected outcome. In the Darbhanga Graduates' Constituency, the BJP candidate was defeated by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate.
The BJP had once again fielded sitting MLC Sarvesh Kumar from the Darbhanga Graduates' Constituency. However, RJD candidate Anil Jha defeated him by a margin of 450 votes, delivering a significant victory to the opposition party.
Results for eight Bihar Legislative Council seats have been declared. The BJP won two seats, including one graduates' constituency and one teachers' constituency. The RJD secured two seats, while independent candidates won two others. The Janata Dal (United) and Jan Suraaj Party won one seat each.
The results in Maharashtra and Bihar have therefore brought setbacks for the BJP and its allies, while the MVA and opposition parties have registered important victories. In Maharashtra, the defeat in all three graduates' constituencies has also exposed differences within the Mahayuti alliance, turning the election outcome into a fresh source of political friction between its partners.
